These character designs are a part of my alternate history scenario depicting a US military occupation of Canada in early 2025.

The main design challenge I gave myself: How would you design Canadian Insurgents that each look distinct and believable in a realistic, modern setting? A few considerations:
- Leaning into realism means clothing should be functional, non-obstructive, and fit the role; e.g an insurgent who operates undercover cannot look too conspicuous; clothing and gear should conceivably make sense if being used in combat.
- Unlike middle eastern insurgents that are so common in fiction thanks to the GWOT, there is no distinctly Canadian 'ethnic' clothing that isn't also a cultural cliche or would be highly impractical (e.g. Stetson hat, First Nations clothing, ...); i.e. must avoid fantastical and tropey elements.
- Modern Canadian (and generally, North American) society is cosmopolitan, with particularly diverse urban cultures; insurgents should look like ordinary people pulled off the street and into the fight, however I wanted something more than just 'streetwear + weapon + tactical gear.'
- Weapons and equipment must also reflect conditions on the ground, i.e. either modified domestically available legal firearms and kit, or foreign inventory from parties who would have an interest in supporting the insurgents.
- Ultimately settled on small costume flourishes that hint at Canadian locales like sports jerseys and recognizable logos, with red and white caution tape (available at any hardware store) as the most common unifying element among the civilians.
- The reservists were more fun design-wise - here the angle was to juxtapose civilian wear and military kit, with CADPAT camouflage being the unifying element. I tried to strike a balance between what might be more practical to wear in combat (active wear, sneakers) versus what would present as 'normal person suddenly thrown into combat' (sport sandals, button shirt, etc). I also used slightly older gear (flak vest, older C7 rifle, older style tactical vest) and the last gen camouflage pattern to show that these aren't front line regular force units.
